The bus from Vilcabamba to Loja was quite fast, but the second one from Loja to Cuenca was a bit of an old banger. The managed to fit double the amount of people that normally travel on a bus (i.e. full corridors with people standing up), and the state of the road to Cuenca is terrible. There are huge pot holes all along and parts of the road have disappeared totally.
The fun part was when after 20 minutes on the road a young kid started vomiting all over the corridor as if he was trying to imitate the best scenes of the exorcist. So the trip of 6 hours (which should have been 4) had its particular "odour".
Anyway, we have made it to Cuenca and checked into the hostal. Its a very nice little colonial house in the old part of the city, and we have a splendid view to the river. As its dark there is no touring around tonight, but we are looking forward to tomorrow as the streets we have passed do look very nice to walk along (very similar to streets of Granada, Spain).
The picture was taken at Sarauza which has a typical Sunday market and most of the men were dressed in this manner (with a dark poncho and black short trousers - we guess its to avoid them getting dirty with all the mud when they wear boots).
