Another challenging day lay ahead - culture and trekking!

We started with the local museo in Chonchi - Museo de las Tradiciones Chonchinas. What looks like a house falling to pieces from outside is probably the most interesting museum up to now (with exception of the Santiago History Museum). It is basically a 19th century house which has been maintained as it was and completed with furniture and pictures from up to 200 years back. Each room has a theme and the guide runs the visitors through all of the pieces, etc.

Veronika spoilt the fun for everyone by unveiling the "mysterious origin of the blue refreshment bottle". In one of the displays there is a coke size bottle with a blue boat as a logo in front. The guide (excellent young guide by the way - full of info) stated that "no one knows where the bottle comes from". Veronika asked her to open the display, she turned it round and it says "refreshment drink, manufactured by Kusch, Puerto Montt"...end of mystery! Apart from that all the rest of the pieces were very valuable - pictures of the flooding after the 1960 earthquake of Valparaiso are a good watch.

After the culture show, we decided to continue with our fitness preparation for Torres of the Pains next week. This time our trekking expedition took us to Fort Tauco which is in the commune of Chonchi.

The walk was slightly tough (uphills and downhills all the way) and the main problem being that there were no signs (except one at the fortress!) to help us find the right way in between dozens of little farm roads.

In any case after about 10kms we made it to the Fort, and managed to cut some kms on the way back. The Fort is well worth the walk, and the scenery (as described by Darwin) is quite similar in parts to the Lake District in England or parts of Wales in the rolling hills, etc.

Lunch was top at a small lake. Silent, full of widelife and all the elements for a relaxing lunch...

Dinner was an experiment on local cuisine. We tried "Pichanga" which is a mix of everything you can ever eat (potatoes, sausage, red meat, avocado, tomato, onion, etc, etc)
The great thing was arriving at the restaurante "Titanic" and asking for a menu. Their reply was "we dont serve food" which was quite a shock. However the waiter did add "we only serve Pichanga"....which is exactly what we wanted...obviously it is not considered "food"! Great place anyway. The plate on the photograph was $5,000 pesos.

Notes:
- Chonchi Museum: $500 pesos. Has good videos at the entrance that can be watched on customs, etc. Spanish only. You can buy excellent priced cotton presents from an old lady in one of the rooms (gloves, jumpers, hats, etc)
