The trip to San Pedro de Atacama was a tough 700kms at 70-80 kms per hour given the strong wind, the lorries, one track road, the bumps on the road, the lack of road at times, the terrible Xmas music on the radio, the 30 plus heat, no air conditioning and the gentle increase of height to 2.400 metres above sea level...in any case we enjoyed every kilometre.
Given my English blood and Veronikas love for brew - we obviously did a nice "Tea stop" in the desert and brewed a nice pot of tea at 30 degrees celsius.
The altitude takes us a bit to get used to it - mainly you feel as if you have been running for a minute but you have only walked
Last night we arrived at 11pm and wondered around the dusty streets of San Pedro looking for a camping but decided to spend the night at a parking place. All we wanted to do is sleep. Fair enough! There was another VW camper van there from Argentina, and the town was very very silent so no problem.
This morning, after a coffee and empanada, we found a hostal that let us stay in their back yard for little money. Around us is all desert.
We have booked a tour to "El Tatio Geysers" which normally are more active at 6am in the morning which means that tomorrow we will get up at 3 in the morning to to picked up.
This evening we will be going to Valle de La Luna to see the expected wonderful sunset...
Merry Xmas everyone from the desert.
