8:30am we were on our bikes heading out of the valley with the sun shining directly into our eyes. Nothing like trying to stay on the road with only about 10% of your vision.
As we came off the tar road onto the gravel beside the Swartberg Nature Reserve, we had a bit of a heartstopping moment. Koos was riding ahead, me following on behind, and then Peter and Jan behind me. As I came around one of the corners all I could see was Koos disappear of the edge of the road. My heart skipped a beat, and I instinctively slammed on the breaks. I then realised what happened and quickly rode up to where I saw him go over. Where I thought I'd see him and his bike, there was nothing but a huge furrow on the side of the road. I then realised how far he would've fallen. Fortunately as I got there Koos appeared, looking a bit shocked but ok. Peter and Jan arrived and stopped soon afterwards.
Looking down the furrow, Koos' bike was lying completely upside down on it's handle bars. Koos, Jan and Peter soon got the bike back on its wheels before taking a breather and checking that Koos was fine. The crash bars of the bike seemed to take the brunt of the impact. Furthermore, there didn't seem to be much else that was wrong with the bike barring a few scratches here and there. Very surprising!
Peter took the bike for a quick ride down the road to check that everything was in order before we set off. We diverted a little bit taking a slightly different route past Red Hill back to Calitzdorp.
Further on down Route 62, we again stopped at Ronnies Sex Shop for lunch. At Barrydale we said goodbye to Jan who was heading back to Napier and the three of us continued on towards Worcester. By the time we arrived home 6pm, my body was aching and tired from being on the bike the whole day.
