31 March 2009 - Tuesday

An early escape from work permitted us to be on the road towards Springbok by 12:30pm. A route cannot be more simple than jumping straight onto the N7 and staying on it until you hit your destination.

We arrived in Sprinbok shortly after 6pm. There we met up with Peter's dad, Uncle Bernard. Our first objective was to drop off Peter's bakkie at the local vets' place where it would remain while we're up in Namibia. Just simpler and more economical for the 3 of us to drive up in one vehicle opposed to two. And considering the travel arrangement in Uncle Bernard's bakkie where there's a mattress in the back to sleep in, I wasn't exactly complaining.

As we were staying at the Springbok Lodge, run by Oom Jopie, we thought we'd drop in there for some dinner as well. The little shop/restaurant is a very nicle little place considering it was based out in the middle of nowhere. After an order of three steaks we were each brought a shot glass of 'holy water'. I wasn't sure what to make of it until I smelt the stuff - Mampoer - pure alcohol!! As you shoot the Mampoer you can feel it burn down your throat and immediately warm up your system. It doesn't take long to kick in either.

The one thing I've decided I have to do having stopped there is to return when the Namaqualand is in bloom. Definitely need to plan a trip that way!!!
