Where I stayed
The traffic was extremely bad and it was a complete crawl all the way. I do not remember a point in time when we exceeded 30 kilometres per hour speed.
Finally after going diverting the journey through some village roads, we arrived in Padang at 9 pm. We were completely exhausted from the journey and the only thing in our mind was to get to the hotel and get some good rest after dinner.
Padang was just a simple city with no buildings higher than two stories, except for a few international hotels as there are frequent earthquakes here. All the evidence from the last major earthquake was still evident here. Even the hotel which we stayed which was the least affected hotel had some severe cracks on the walls. Its lucky that is is still standing post a 8.3 magnitude quake.
There were also some international hotels that have completely collapsed that killed more than 50 guests. It was a sad sight to see. Even after three years, the city has not completely got out of the devastation. There were also many homes that were still flat and waiting for the governments funds allocation to reach them for them to rebuilt their homes.
As for my hotel, it was beautiful and we got a room facing the city. I deliberately wanted that too as the other side of the building faces the Indian Ocean. Just as a precaution if there was a tsunami that night, at least I may have had a better chance of surviving. Hehehe
After checking in, we head to the coffee house to get some dinner. We did not feel like going out for dinner due to the exhaustion. A specialty here which we tried was the fried bananas with grated cheese which tasted quite good. We also did take a brief walk near the ocean but we could not see much as it was dark and the waves were surely frightening.
After dinner, we retired to the room for a good nights rest.
