What I did
Tasting of Pindang Sekanak...a local dish.

This afternoon, we have already checked out of the hotel a while ago and then head for lunch to a deserted part of town, the old port of Palembang which was the main city in the 1600's.

Today, it is more of a fishing village where most of the people staying here are either fishermen or farmers. However, the reason we came here was to try out another specialty dish of fish called Pindang Sekanak.

This fish is steamed and then cooked in spicy soy sauce. The soy sauce has been left to soak with chillies for at least 30 days thus making it extremely spicy.

A simple lunch it is, just plain white rice, this fish and cockles on skewers which have also been steamed. It may not be suitable for people who have an irritable stomach as the chillies and the cockles can actually cause trouble and some do land with diarrhea.

For us it was pretty much okay though my dad refused to try the cockles as they seemed raw to him and he is not used to eating it that way. Definitely it was a memorable lunch as we have never tasted anything like this before. The fish was also extremely good and the soy sauce was lovely. On the whole, for three the lunch only came up to USD 5.
