Where I stayed
The flight from Kuala Lumpur this time was in the afternoon and we arrived in Palembang in the afternoon too.....due to the time difference. When we touched down, we were greeted by my friend at the airport. The Palembang was quite modern compared to most other airports in Indonesia and this must be due the fact that the last South East Asian Games were just held in Palembang last year and the airport authorities including the customs and immigration were much more open to the arriving foreigners.
Once we touched down, we were greeted by my friend and the first thing that we did was head to a good restaurant for lunch. Wow...the weather in Palembang was extremely hot. We were taken to a restaurant called Pagi Sore which literally means morning and evening...and I was told that they had a number of outlets in the city and this was the main one. I was also told by my friend Yanti that there is another competitor called siang malam which literally translates to Day and Night Restaurant...hehehe what a contrast...I thought to myself.
This restaurant was great and the food of Minangkabau style which has its roots in the province of West Sumatra. There was absolutely nothing to complain about this restaurant. From its presentation to cleanliness to food quality, it was up to the mark.
Along the way, I also looked at the streets and discovered that they were extremely clean with not a drop of rubbish on the streets. I was told by my friend that Palembang has been winning the the Award of Cleanest City in Indonesia all these years and they try their best to keep up to the mark....Excellent I thought to myself.
After lunch, we were taken to a traditional house which was converted to a small museum but unfortunately as it was a Saturday, it was already closed when we arrived. Well...having loads of time at our perusal, we decided to head back to the hotel for a break and good rest. The weather also did not permit us to visit anywhere else in the city.
The hotel was excellent. As I had booked online, the check in was smooth. Being the only 5 star hotel in the city, they were marvelous. Once again, this is part of the Arcor group, which is a French company with a chain of hotels throughout the world. This particular Novotel is the largest in Indonesia and it was really huge. It seemed like a fort from the outside and the rooms were extremely big.
We were in the room till late evening and in fact I managed to catch a good 2 hours of sleep. When it came to 8 pm Indonesian time, we head out to the lobby again to meet the driver for a short spur of activities in the night.
