This is the most famous icon of Banda Aceh, the state mosque. It is already a few hundred years old and it was badly devastated by the last tsunami. During the time of the tsunami, the water levels here reached around 5 meters.

Earlier, though we finished our previous place around 4 pm, we insisted to get back to the room and get some rest, the main reason being the unbearable heat in Aceh. Also, another reason was that since this is the only remaining location to visit for the day, I preferred to do a night photography of this area instead of daylight.

Actually, Banda Aceh is quite small. However you travel, you would end up going around the city in circles and just today itself, by visiting the other places which we went today, we had passed this particular mosque almost four or five times.

As it was a Friday, they mosque authorities were quite strict here. Entrance to the mosque is possible as long as visitors were long pants and loose fitted shirts and for the ladies, they have to be fully covered from head to toe.

There were also guards walking around the place with batons, seemed like a really strict regiment here. When came time for the prayers, we all had to stop all photography and had to be out of the mosque gates until they finished the prayers which took almost 45 minutes. During prayer times, only Muslims are allowed in the mosque and no photography of the mosque and the surroundings are allowed during these times.

Well, in Malaysia, it is not that strict and I remember it being so in Brunei too. Well, we are in a foreign land and we have to respect their customs and practices. We stood outside the gates while waiting for the prayers to be over as I had still a few more intended shots to take.

Once the prayer time was over, we walked inside the mosque compound again and I resumed my photography. Truly, architecturally, it is a beautiful mosque and I feel proud that the people of Aceh hold its sanctity at high levels. Once we were done with the mosque, it was already nine plus at night and the only remaining thing to do next, was to get another taste of Aceh's great culinary.
