Highlights of the Fourth of July Weekend at McMurdo
Friday--Sumo Wrestling! Well, kind of...homemade sumo wrestling consisting of lots of bubble-wrap, duct-tape and sheets with a bunch of mattresses on a concrete floor. Pretty funny stuff, mostly because it resembled enormous hunchbacks sumo wrestling. The heavy shop was cleaned out, scrubbed down and turned into a summer barbecue (kind of). There was a band, beer, barbecue, caramel popcorn, a Twinkie gun, dunk tank and of course, the sumo wrestling. It was a pretty good time although it was not fun waking up the next morning bright and early to haul 15 mattresses back to a mil van...it was freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing! I was lucky enough to see some really cool nacreous clouds that I otherwise would have slept through though.
Saturday--Dinner Party at Scott Base! Ron and I were lucky enough to be invited. Donna the Chef put out an amazing meal for over 70 people. There was ham, seafood, homemade buns, cheeses-and I accidentally thought the butter was cheese and bit right into a big hunk before realizing it...duh!
Monday--Lucky us, its Condition One and we've gotten to sleep in until 11:00 a.m., woohoo! It's Monday so our holiday is over and it's gotten warmer (from -100F to -84F...that's wind-chill temp). It was a great weekend and now the long month of July looms ahead of us. 15 more weeks for Velvet and Ron in Antarctica!
