Midwinter Celebration!!!

It was a really fun weekend. Everyone (except the Galley staff) had two whole days off--Sunday and Monday. The fun started on Saturday night when we all got off work early to go home and get ready for the big dinner. Most people dressed up for the event and looked really nice. Lots of girls visited the hair salon at some point that day and I even had my eyebrows waxed! The galley was decorated beautifully and it really seemed like we were attending a special event. There were even volunteers walking around serving fancy appetizers and refilling our glasses of wine.

Sunday was the second Polar Plunge of the winter at Scott Base. It was actually pretty warm out--only -1 F with no wind. It was an easier plunge than the last one (maybe because I was more prepared) and relaxing in their hot tub afterwards was very nice. Then, just like last time, the Kiwis provided pizza and partying afterwards. One of the more interesting pizza toppings this time was deep fried mussels-and it was goo---ood. The Kiwis have Guinness beer too, which we don't-mmmmmm, pizza and beer.

Monday there was supposed to be a walk/run race to Scott's Hut but the weather wasn't cooperating and it was Condition 2, so that was cancelled. So Ron and I mainly went to brunch and then laid around in our room being lazy all day. I watched Steel Magnolias and he watched Full Metal Jacket. Later that night, Chef Bobby's Tiki Bar entertainment was Ron's race car track that his Tata sent him for Christmas-it's pretty cute to see grown-ups crouched down racing cars and getting really excited about it.

Next weekend is the Black Ops Party which I've heard should be pretty fun-it's theme is aliens and conspiracy theories about Antarctica......
