After Essen we stayed a night in Magdeburg to get our train to Prague Friday. The train trip was fantastic, just past Dresden the scenery was amazing, the river (which was almost dry in some places as its been so hot) and mountains, cute little houses!! The view changed a little when we got into the Czech Republik, a bit more sombre, less mountains and in a bizare twist of wierdness, Tesco supermarkets (they are an England institution, so funny to see them in Eastern Europe!!!)
It was luckily a bit cooler in Prague than it has been and we walked to our hostel - Extol Inn, very nice rooms refurbed, looked like it should really have been a fancy hotel and ours was only a 2 star standard room!!! Werder were playing so we went in search of a pub showing the game, came across one just near our hostel!!! The CRAZY thing was, the half litre beer was CHEAPER than the half litre cans in the supermarket $1 aud!!, that is unheard of!!! But not for Prague!!!! This pub was in a quite area though, not in the tourist hotspots, which are more expensive!
About 45mins walk from the centre, but along the river Vltava!!! So many pretty bridges and as we got closer and closer to the centre, beautiful church spires, the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge with its many ancient statues!
Prague is all every tourist guide says it is, beautiful, historical, more similar to other European cities than I expected...teeeeeming with tourists and wierdly, wasps!! The Charles Bridge had swarms of both hehe!!
We walked up to the castle area, thru the huge gates with amazing views of the city and around the cathederal and then we wandered thru some queiter back streets, across the bridge and into Stare Mesto the old town! Beautiful huge town square with astrological clock that has glockenspiel including a skeleton ringing a bell, very Praha!!! We made our way thru a maze of old cobblestoned streets and alleys to a fantastic veg restaurant Beas Veg Dhaba - delicious and so cheap, 2 big meals for under $10 aud!!! So of course we went again the next day hehe!!!
Went to our fave pub on the way home for beer and absynthe...
Its no real wonder why Prague is as revered as it is, I went in with one idea of what it would be like and came out knowing the way it is, is far more exciting than what one can imagine.
