Hello. Another day of the festival of the Goddess Durga continues with many bands and dancing. A huge crowd gathered and we were cornered off by a rope to hold back the crowds... quite a bit of pushing as people strained to look and I felt like I had to plant my feet pretty solid to avoid falling forward. Today was not nearly as colorful as the procession yesterday. However, due to Gabe's illness, we are going to need to stay put for several days more as he is not able to travel. It's not like in the US where you just jump in the car and go... here it will be a very bumpy ride down a mountain that will take 3 hours by jeep and then a 10 hour train ride to get us back to Calcutta. However, if I've got to be stuck anywhere, this is a great place to be.

Well, just had a brief conversation with the gentleman who runs this cafe about his faith.. his belief is that we need our forefathers ( parents, etc.) who die before us, their blessing in order for our prayers today to have meaning. He asked Gabe if he believed in God, and then asked if he could do something for him.. He touched each shoulder, down his arm, down his leg, went outside and 'shook it off.' He did this 3 times and then stood before a small altar that is in this room before returning to Gabe to touch him in the same areas once more. I find it as meaningful to me to have this man, in his own faith, have the desire and faith to want to pray for my son. It does not matter at all to me if his beliefs might be different from mine - the gesture itself is one of lovingkindness and who can criticize that?

Gabe is still not feeling well and tells me we need to leave asap. Will try to write more later....

Judy,
I just had a moment to catch up on your adventure. I hope Gabe is better. Nothing worse than being sick and in a foreign country. I'm glad you are well. You will post your photos online, right!

It's great that I am reading your entries and not you reading mine because you have so much more patience for detail. I get a bit of the feel for what you are seeing. Of course, there is no way to experience it without experiencing. I do appreciate your stories....keep writing!!!! When do you return?

Hugs!
Suzi
