No shave Novembeard – Some of the young men at church are doing the no shave Novembeard and Johan thought that this is the perfect excuse not to shave. He thought he could win on four levels, first, no shaving for a week sounded like a vacation to him, second, his beard should be longer than Izak's, although Izak has been trying for two weeks, he could embarrass Lelani and the most important item, he knew it would drive me crazy. Randy, how can you do this to me, now I have to travel with a hobo, I am sure if I give him an empty can that he will be able to raise enough money to pay for our vacation.

We spend Thursday night at the luxurious Gage Hotel, the one evening we really splurged, but it was so worth it. We had dinner in the Gage Hotel’s Restaurant, and there I saw the most hilarious piece of art. This very old photo shows a group of Mexicans dressed up in their Sunday best, but the really funny thing is the short lady in the middle of the photo, for those of you that missed it, she is standing on a rock to make her look taller. See it is not just me that need to figure ways to make me look taller.

On Friday morning we had a slow morning that we spend walking through Marathon. We had coffee at "The Burnt Biscuit", the shop consist of half coffee shop and half antique shop. Here I found the most amazing piece of handmade lace. I immediately knew that I had to have it no matter the price. In the end it turned out to be only $5, I love a bargain, but felt really sad to think of the numbers of hours that went into making this lace. In the end I overcame my guilt by thinking that the crafter would have loved to get five dollars for it a 100 years ago.

Our aim for the end of the day was Concan. Now all you Texan’s it is a town, and a town big enough to host a golf tournament. Lelani is playing in a two day tournament, we missed the play on Friday but will be there in time to see her play on Saturday.  Dinner Friday night was in Concan, eating with the golf team. I though Lelani would be overjoyed to see us, but one look at her dads Novembeard and she did not want to be associated with us.  So that is one win for Johan, OK make that two, he really got on my nerves with the hobo look.

Johan and I spend the night at the beautiful Live Oaks bed and breakfast in Uvaldi, only 45 minutes from the golf course.  Saturday was spent watching Lelani play in a really picturesque setting we are so blessed to have these opportunities.

Who said that alcohol and guns don’t mix, we have proof that it can be done. Driving through the little town of Uvaldi we saw a bright neon sign advertising both guns and liquor, and looking at the outside of the store it does look like you can buy both items at the same place. I am sure this makes living in Uvaldi and interesting experience.

As we were getting ready to leave the coach came up to us and suggested that we go and visit the Lost Maple State Natural Area. We had nothing to loose and did not want to go home via the highway, so we set of on the back roads. Who ever said that Texas does not have fall foliage? We saw some lovely fall colors on the maple trees.  In the final stretch we went through Hunt and Ingram, both towns are build on the banks of the Guadalupe, I think we found the next place that we will visit for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle.

Satisfied and well rested we want to thank all of you that followed us, and for those that commented on the blog over the last week. There is still some time to add comments. Next weekend we will have the full blog (editorial, photos and comments) printed for future safekeeping.

Love you all,

Johan and Aletta Vanderkansie

P.S. for those that wonder about the “Vanderkansie”, this is a nickname that my mom gave us, it is a mixture of our last name and the Afrikaans word “Vakansie” that means to be on holiday.
