Today we were picked up at our hotel by Grayline for our all day tour
to the World Heritage Blue Mountains. They are about 2 hours west of Sydney.
We saw them on the airplane coming in. They run perpendicular to the coast.
There are only 2 highways that go west over the Blue Mountains into the
interior of Australia on the Great Western Highway.  In the mountains the highway follows the
ridge so you could see out to the other ridges….if we weren’t fogged in.  They call them the Blue Mountains because of the oil from the Eucalyptus trees that mixes with the fog and from a distance makes the air look blue.

We first visited Featherdale Wildlife Park which was pretty good.  After that we drove thru Leura to Katoomba for lunch.  At Katoomba is the Echo Point lookout to see the famous 3 Sisters rock formation.  We couldn’t see a thing unfortunately.  After lunch however we drove a few minutes to a tram that crossed a valley.  Karen and I took a short walk to a waterfall instead of going across the valley right away.  In that time the fog cleared a bit and we were able to see the waterfall that must have been about 600 ft high.  The steepest funicular in the world was closed for $35 mil in repairs so we rode another tram down into the valley.  Again, we lucked out because the fog cleared even more so we were able to see the 3 Sisters and other rock formations at the rim of the valley.

Then we drove to Leura for some shopping time, and on to Paramatta to
catch a river ferry back into Circular Quay in Sydney.  The Paramatta River was used for shipping back in the day but now the easterly portion of it is lined with expensive
homes, apartments, rowing clubs, and marinas. It’s a pretty nice area of Sydney for sure.   We stopped at the terminal in Darling Harbour but stayed on until we got off in Circular Quay.  Went to the Customs House for more wifi time,  and then to dinner at Pancakes on the Rock.
Really good Thai crepes and strawberry cream crepes.  Then it we walked back to CQ and caught the train back to our hotel.

You two have done an incredible job of documenting this amazing adventure. I'll
be sad when it ends as I've really enjoyed the ride!

Big Bro on

Snakes, another Christmas card photo, yikes.
