Happy Valentines to our vicarious followers. I had to use vicarious because a few of you decided to use that word a couple of days ago.  Anyway, not only did I bring a birthday card for Karen, I brought a Valentine's card from home also.  Scored a bunch of points today!  And I needed them.
Today we woke up early (7:30) to the sound of the tractors hauling the water taxi boats out to the Tasman Bay.  We showed up at Marahau water taxi and were transported a few miles out to Torrent Bay.  From there we walked the Abel Tasman Track to Bark Bay…5.8 miles.  A beautiful walk thru tropical ferns and trees.  Every once in a while we were able to see a white sand beach and blue water of the sea.  It was about a 2.5 hr walk on a nice sunny day, probably about 70-75 degrees, but cool in the forest parts.  Arrived at Bark Bay and used the flushing toilets, not pit type.  Interesting for a remote beach with no road to it.  Sometimes it’s the little things that stand out! I went for a swim while Karen laid on the beach while we waited for our water taxi back to Watering Cove, where we picked up our double kayaks for our paddle back to Marahau.  We paddled into a couple of caves, and then towards the end of our 3 hr. paddle we set sail with 8 kayaks next to each other.  It worked for a while but then we broke apart and 4 of us sailed most of the way back, about a half mile.

While on the hike portion I asked another hiker to take our picture.  Turns out he and his S.O. were from Holland.  They were going on the same hike and kayak plan we were.  We joked about various things dutch along the way.

We had made reservations for dinner at the Hooked on Marahau restaurant…the only restaurant, across the street from our park.  For V-Day, Karen had monkfish again, and I had salt and pepper calamari over a wonderful green salad.  Wow!  Dessert was chocolate (of course)mud cake with vanilla ice cream and berries.  A tasty finish to a day of walking and paddling with a light breeze and a sunny blue NZ sky.

Wish you all could be here to experience this.  I’m in heaven.  I’ve had the privilege to do a few really nice walks, most of them with close friends.  Here’s my top 6 but not in priority.
Grand Canyon rim to rim, Half Dome in Yosemite, Cinque Terre in Italy, Dolomite Mountains in Italy, Great Wall of China, and the Abel Tasman track.  I’m a lucky guy.  And 2 of them have been with Karen which make them even more special.  Karen didn’t make it to the special bathroom on the Great Wall with Barry and I.  That’s another story about the "bathroom".

Anyway, you get the picture.  This was one of the most special days I’ve been able to experience.
