ENGLISH VERSION

The Nukak Maku have been for centuries a nomad group located in Guaviare (Colombia) a fantastic area in the Amazon basin, their gathering and hunting economy have permitted them to move freely in a vast territory full of  exotic flora and fauna, with no restrictions of mobility at all. Perhaps the only natural restrictions come from the cycle of river floods, a dramatic illness of one of their clan members or maybe the heavy tropical rain, similar to them, mobility has been a important aspect of our nature even in sedentary cultures as well.

Just like the Nukak move in their territory freely, Margarita and I have lived the same experience in this journey, we have transited nonchalantly in this massive continent with no complications, in fact when we arrived in Mercosur (Treaty of Southern Countries of South America) we were surprised when the customs officer let us in the country without special documentation for our motorbike, even in Argentina and Uruguay the formats were surprisingly basic and the traffic permission was for almost a year.

Mercosur in short promotes the free market between all the nations in the south of Latin America and currently attempts a free transit for persons and goods, it means an Argentinean citizen can work in Brasil or a Paraguayan can do the same in Uruguay without any extra documentation. During an interesting chat with a migration officer he assured me that in the next future a tourists like us won't need a passport to visit his country.

If our human nature has been to move within territories with no social restrictions, the barriers or filters the modern era has designed is a sophisticated system of restrictions for most of us that every day is more controlling, totalitarian and radical.  Some examples are the enormous queues a “third world citizen” must make to get a visa or the ridiculous sort of forms to legalize a migration condition do not compare with the touch restrictions like the penalization of illegal immigrants (Arizona, France and Italy) where your ethnic features afro, latin or arabic can be a reason to be a suspect and  go to prison. Or the long wall along the border between United States and Mexico where North American civil armed groups “hunt” humans trying to cross illegally the frontier, or the politics carried out by France to exile European gypsies.

Each of these examples very often are related with a false feeling of chauvinism, where we blame immigrants for the cause of ours problems, like a Parisian with the Argelians or Quiteño with Colombians. Despite this restrictive panorama over the fundamental and millenarian right of mobility, I found an open environment in our journey, even though it is embryonic,  it is happening like it does  with the people of Nemby Nemuha (the Guarani title for Mercosur). The important decision to open instead of close, even though it is now a mercantilist idea builds a bridge to close the gaps. It feels that we are close to being  world citizens like the Nukak perceived territory instead of  guards of piece of land.

Once again, I'm with grandma on this. I didn't realize all the people coming in from our southern borders only wanted to tour around on motorcycle...?? Manhunts? Going to jail merely because you look a certain way? Hmm... It certainly is a complicated issue which could use reform but ... not sure it is as simple as this. Well... I am enjoying your adventures, however, and am glad you have had this opportunity.

Ben on

Fer, you have great insights on borders and boundaries. I also wish that those with the issues would hold themselves accountable and not persecute those in need of help and/or a better life.
