Most of the traffic in Florence is from people coming to the infamous dunes along that portion of the Oregon coast. ATV heaven. The easy access and second largest dunes in the region makes this place a popular spot for people to come and ride on the weekends from Eugene or even stop from farther away to play with the camping grounds in the surrounding areas. At any rate, the South Jetty area is a favorite for most ATV riders.
I remember it more for just general beach walking and I even had a flashback of throwing crab rings over the dock and watching my Dad get really mad when the Sea Lions would eat the bait.
Later in the afternoon we touched briefly on the other side, the North Jetty, and picked along in the driftwood piles. Amazing looking pieces of wood that have come ashore. Some whole trees find their way up to the shore along the Oregon coast.
There was also an old salmon release area that looked like a rusted chute release. Apparently it's now used for diving during high tide. There were a lot of surfers out on the river outlet as well - at least two seems like a lot for that cold of water!

Before the state stepped in, the local kids would try to take their own cars up South Jetty Hill. Volkswagons, Toyotas, Vegas, LOL you name it. It used to be just a pull out spot before the actual beach area. Now, wow.....I would never try to brave the congestion of people and ATVs.
