Had to change more money before we left Bagan. Stopped at TonTon's dad’s place and watched peanut oil being milled by an ox, toddy brought down from the palms and taste tested fresh, fermented and distilled toddy (literally firewater!!). Came away with some jaggery (palm sugar sweeties) – not quite as delicious as tamarind flakes which I call sweetie darlings. Wafer thin, they look like anorexic chocolate buttons and come in stacks of 5, wrapped in tissue paper twists.

Stopped at a local market and said goodbye to TonTon’s family before the hellish long day’s drive. Arrived Pyay and after much needed showers at the Smile Motel went to Hline Ayer by the river and watched some kind of karaoke contest over dinner.
