We went over the midway point of our travels without seeing the open ocean. Given our successful resolution to see the beach once a week in New England all summer last year (which I've aparently resoved to show off about as often as possible), it seemed strange that we hadn't really dug our feet into the sand in the places we've seen so far. Alas, we decided to head north to a town on the northern most tip of Borneo, where the South China Sea meets some other sea.

On day 2 we rented bikes. I know, I know--I was pushing my luck with these outdoorsy and sporty shenanigans! As I'm sure you could have predicted, after about 10 minutes on the bike a bug flew into my eye and I careened off the road into a ditch. My (tiny) sporty ego and my legs were bruised, but I was otherwise unharmed. About five minute after I recovered, the pedal flew off of Kyla's bike, nearly causing another dive into the ditch. We limped and pushed our bikes the rest of the way to a path in the woods, which lead to a gasp-inducing beach. It beat the crap out of our usual Revere haunts and was even more secluded than the beach by our hotel. We didn't see another soul on the beach all day.

We swam, laid in the sun (me with 20 layers of 30+ sunblock, which still didn't do the trick), and swam some more (waded, more than swam in my case; fear not). We also walked down the beach and over some rocks to a deserted sandbar, attaching the beach to a little palm-studded island. I'm not making this up just to be obnoxious. Really.

When we tired of the beach and craved a smoothie, Kyla heroically pedaled the one working bike back to the rental place and returned with a car to pick me up.

P.S. Unless it is sunny and gorgeous in Boston, please do not view the attached photos.

P.P.S. After two days at the beach Kyla and I are starting to look interracial again. She is a roasted coffee bean and I am a spotted lobster.

P.P.P.S. two notes about the blog from this novice: (1) for some reason the photos are all out of order. I can't seem to fix this. (b) I'm not sure if the email alerts are going out. I've tried to set it so that they only go out for the ones with some substance, but I'm not sure if I've succeeded. My apologies if you get too many.

Made me laugh out loud, again. Though so sorry you careened into a ditch! Eek. Looks amazing, you two.

In response to your P.P.P.S. I don't seem to be getting too many email alerts. Just a few. And they're helpful cues! No worries.

Looks like a magical spot!
