We left about 9am this morning after a simple contential breakfast and headed south. One of the towns we passed through has an interesting feature on the top of the court house. See the picture. Yes that is a tree growing out of the Greensburg Court House. Grandpa has heard about it for years.
The story is that a tree first sprouted on the roof of the Decatur County Courthouse in 1870, and was removed. In 1875 another one appeared, and grew there until 1929, when it "failed to take leaf." Meanwhile, another started growing on the other side of the tower, and then still another tree appeared. Greensburg celebrates the trees, which grow with no visible means of nourishment, by hosting an annual "Tree City Fall Festival."
