After an early morning start and no time for a dive I caught the bus up to Colombo for my next destination. Singapore.

I have had a great time in Sri Lanka especially as it was not on my itinerary. A beautiful, green and lush country with some amazing history and sights. From cool mountain areas to some fabulous beaches and great places to absorb the history. The food has been excellent. A lot different from India. The curries are a lot hotter but there is also a great variety of local food for all palettes. The people have been extremely friendly and helpful. Everyone has big smiles on their faces. You do not get hassled as badly is one would in India.

The country has relatively few tourists but I think this will change in the near future as it cheap and easy to travel around. Maybe I should keep quiet so as the place doesn't get too spoiled. It was only a few ago that their 30 year civil war came to an end and they also had to recover from the 2004 Tsunami that caused huge damage and  about 30 000 deaths.

A normal trip up to airport and arrived in plenty of time. I bumped into an Italian guy I had met at Ella who is on the same flight to Singapore, so we will join forces and check out Singapore together.

I know Tiger Airways is cheap so I as I had had nothing to eat all day I ordered the in flight meal of Teriyaki Chicken. What I got was a tiny bowl of microwaved mush for R94.00. I guess you learn the hard way.

Singapore here I come.

Hey Padda - glad to see you have been enjoying yourself! From beach life to city life will be a huge culture shock. First shock will be the prices. You will be lucky to get a small Hostel style room with shared bathroom for about $50 per day. A good idea is to buy a pass for the open top tour buses. The pass is valid for 3 days and has designated stops so you can navigate the city easily and it is much more convenient than the buses and tubes. You hop on and off whenever and wherever you please. It also affords you a great introduction to Singapore via their recorded tour blurp.

Food in the little side shops is excellent and not too pricey and you must do The Long Bar at Raffles (draught beer at R105-00 and Singapore Sling at R250-00 - no wonder I took a spoon!), the Chinese area and a cruise up the river. I went up to the observation deck at the Marina Sands and the view was fantastic but you are only allowed in a small area and it was hellish expensive! The shopping mall in front of it is very modern and the art gallery that looks like a 'hand' is cool. The Opera House is also good to visit.

It is also worth traveling out of the city for a few miles to the beach which has some fabulous Hotels and is very scenic.

Singapore Sling Mate!! Have fun.

Totsiens,

Grant
