Where I stayed
Before I came to India I had read about Pushkar and was really looking forward to visiting here. After my dose of Delhi Belly I picked up an infection of the intestine which some of you who know me I have had before. This is extremely painful and results in intense pain and spasms. I have been treating it with anti biotics and pain killers but this has been going on for 4 days so I am not a happy traveler.
Pushkar is a small but very Holy town that surrounds a lake. All along the lake are ghats where the devoted come to wash and bath. The main attraction of Pushkar is the annual Camel fair where about 50000 camel are traded and about 200 000 people attend the week long fair. The lake is considered one of the holiest but unfortunately this attracts all the fake Holy men and priests who try and rip you off. They try and insist on blessing you and then ask for all names of your family and friends and then charge you per person blessed. It is a well know scam throughout India. I walked down to the lake and was approached by a young guy who claimed he came from a holy family. He was wearing designer jeans and shirt and had the latest Nike shoes but as I am a tourist in a foreign country I allowed him to sit next to me. I am quite happy and respect any ones beliefs and religion but i do get mad when they do not accept my beliefs or views because they are different to theirs. I am prepared to learn but not get dictated to and then have them demand money from me. What should have been a peaceful morning of contemplation and reflection sitting at the ghats watching the daily rituals of the Hindus turned it an ugly scene. I am not sure if I walked out or was evicted.
This actually put a downer on my stay in Pushkar. So I have decided not to stay for the fair and will have to make new plans.
