A nice crisp sunny morning as we head out along Ennerdale water, enjoying the tranquil lake to our left, and pretty forest to our right. Towards the end of the trail on the stoney pathway, Ben found a Tilley hat hanging in a tree, he was then too intent on admiring his new find and duly tripped and took a dive into the heather, at least he smelled better after we fished him out!
We then crossed into a tree plantation for a longish trudge on towards a view of Red Pike which we wisely decided to avoid and turned up towards the peaks later heading for Haystacks. Near the peak we got our first hint of rain. The climb up through the rocky stacks was hard work, but the views at the top were remarkable!!! With vistas that included Ennerdale Water and all the terrain we had covered that day and a stunning look at Buttermere lake. On this route we also enjoyed a view of Great Gable, which Steve reminisced about climbing with Sheilah 13 years ago.
The rain held off and we began our long knee jarring descent down to Grey Knotts and then up again up again to the Hopper Slate Quarry. We stopped for refreshments at the Slate Mine Visitor Centre before our last few miles down through Seatoller and finishing today's 14 miles with a lovely welcome of tea and cookies at Gillercombe.
A nice meal in a pub that evening where Steve enjoyed a pint of Theakstons Old Peculiar.
The highlight of Ben's day had been the large hole that developed in the crotch of Steve's shiny green hiking pants. From his teenage boy's perspective, the hole must have been blown there!
28 miles down 163 to go.
