We arrived at the Denver Airport and found there is no cheap and easy way to get Downtown. Taxis are $50, the shuttle is $19pp and the bus is $10pp but then you will need a cab to get to the hotel so we took the shuttle.

The hotel was rundown and there was a scary wreath of twigs and flowers above the bed. After our experience with bed bugs we hoped nothing would crawl out of that in the middle of the night. The hotel / room did have a great view of Denver though. If only they would spend a few bucks it would have been a really nice place.

That day we asked at Enterprise car rental for a next day hire so we could get to the surrounding mountains. They said the cheapest they could do was $100 for the day and we couldn't return it to the airport it would have to be back to the same downtown lot. The excuse / reason for this was they were merging with Alamo / National and the airport wasn't taking returns because of this? Go figure, doesn't sound right to us.

So the next day we decided to walk to the REI camping store and bought some really great stuff which came in very handy. Travel pillows (Thermarest, very comfortable), thermals and waterproofs. The store was awesome and we wandered around for ages looking at all the great stuff. It was in a good location by a river and from there we decided to follow the river to central Denver which took about 15 minutes.

Downtown Denver is really nice. The main street (16th Street Mall) has a free tram but we decided to wander the length and back up. It was a nice day and we ended it by having a beer in a nice pub. We got back to the hotel and took some shots of Denver.

The next day it was off to Alaska and we were very excited but not about the 05:30 start, especially when the receptionist didn't cancel the executive car when we booked the shuttle instead. It all turned out okay and we got to the airport in plenty of time. Alaska baby here we come!
