After we safely landed our raft and profously thanked Alex for getting us there ALIVE we changed out of wet clothes, had a celebratory beer and hopped into the waiting van to head NORTH to Arenal. The driving was brutal. High density traffic- mostly transport trucks on 2 lane highways ( if you can call them highways) in the dark, Think hills and sharp curves- happy I packed my gravol!
Made it to Arenal just in time for supper then off to bed.
Early the next morning we were picked up at the hotel by Pure Trek Canyonning.

A 15 minute drive up more crazy hills and we made it to the top of the canyon. There were 23 of us brave souls rangng in age from 7 ( I kid you not!) to 60.
We were given water proof jackets, placed in rappelling gear and led down a steep narrow slippery trail by 4 young strapping Costa Rican men.
When we reached the first platform we were given a quick demonstration how to hold onto the ropes and how to release it gently with the other hand .They then grabbed the first person in line ,connected their harness to the main wire, ensured an additional safety line was also connected , turned them around so they were facing the instructor , asked them to place all their weight into the harness and lean back out out over a 130 ft drop with only the legs touching the edge of the platform....OMG!

Oh yeah, and smile for the guy taking your picture...not one of us does not look totally stunned in the picture!

I guess the rational is "don't give them time to think about what they are doing"

I have to admit the first rappel was very intense and somewhat terrifying at the beginning. Once you are halfway down and notice that you are still in one piece you look up and notice the incredable beauty of the canyon wall you are rappelling down.

There were 4 rapels in all ranging in height from 130ft to 89ft. A couple were fun as you are going through a waterfall on your way down and you land in a pool.

After approx 90 minutes and only suffering a few cuts and bruise we  made it to the bottom and finished with a 15 minute hike. The friendly young men  then drove us back to the base and fed us a hearty lunch of beans, rice and chicken.

Really happy I decided to participate in this adventure with my hubby and kids. I have to admit the night before I was having second thoughts!

Thankfully we were off to the hot springs that evening as i think we all had some tense muscle in need of loosening :)

All the best!
