We had a flight to catch from Porto Seguro in Brasil so were on route to there. Instead of a night in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, we choose Colonia from where we could bus via the capital and then onto the Brazilian / Uruguayan border town of Chuy. I'd been to Colonia before when old American Buicks and Fords  cruised the streets a la Cuba, and Australians needed a visa worth U$30, show an onward ticket and for only one entry.

There was no reason for any Australian to want to take up residence as an illegal immigrant in Uruguay then and the same applies now. Nice people and the Uruguayan rugby team I'd acted as interpretor for in the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia were a nice a bunch of fellas as you could meet. Certainly the Aussie girls thought so and the players performances on and off the field were admirable!

Uruguay could be another province of Argentina and was established by the Brits who couldn't get a toe hold in either Argentina or Brazil. It's fairly featureless and the photos of its star attraction, Punta del Este, a coastal resort with high rises, is all I need to see.

Not travelling with any guide book means you need to rely on asking locals and a bit of luck. Finding the Colonia Yacht Club serving ice cold beer on the jetty looking directly west as the sun set over the Rio de la Plata (River of Silver) was the latter. There was no other place I wanted to be. Perfect.

Not so perfect was the noise I couldn't sleep through at the hostel we stayed in that night. Hoons, drunks and revellers (on a Sunday night) meant no alarm clock needed for the 6.00am departure. Didn't matter - I could sleep from west to east across Uruguay without missing anything.
