As we were a couple of hundred kilometres away from Munich, and as the Worlds finished on the opening weekend, we decided to drive over the mountains to the Oktoberfest. We arrived in the afternoon, erected the tent and as there were still tour buses there on the Sunday, we jumped on one and headed to the Oktoberfest grounds. Now as we had been collecting glasses through our little trips to Europe, we thought, here was the opportunity to get the set of steins from the Oktoberfest. We first hit the Paulaner tent. Now Paulaner is a good beer. We ordered two steins and set about demolishing them. As it was our first beer, this one went down quite easily. We finished up, put a stein in our pack, and Lucy walked out. Now the trick here is to use a girl to carry a pack in and out because the security guards will always search a guy, so there was the first one. After a good beer, its good to have a bad one because you will appreciate your third even more, so we moved onto Spaten Brau. Now everyone has different tastes, but this has got to be one of the worst beers I have ever had in my life. Halfway through this stein, we decided we couldn't take anymore and as there was an empty stein on the table, we took the opportunity to slip this one into the pack to go with the other one. We needed a good beer, and what we did next was discover the nectar of the gods. Augustiner. This is easily the best beer in Munich, perhaps Germany, not the world though, and after the crap we had just had, this flowed like nothing we had had before at the Oktoberfest. Third beer, third stein, Lucy was now clinking as she walked. It was now time to hit the roast chickens. Have I ever mentioned that the chickens here are the best in the world????? They melt in your mouth. So we bought one, and as Lucy by this stage was struggling to walk, we jumped on a bus and headed back to the campground. We awoke to another glorious day and caught the bus into the grounds. As it was children's day !!!!! all of the rides were half priced, so we hit all of the roller coasters and then settled down for a day of drinking. Normally, tourists are pushed into the Hofbrau tent and as they do not serve beer with their name on the glass, we coughed up the eight DM's and bought one. We then walked over to the Hacker Pschorr tent, had a beer and took the glass. This was number five and all we had left was the Lowenbrau tent. We made our way to near the stage and jumped onto some seats that had a mixture of German men and Aussie girls from Sydney. People were getting up on the stage so I suggested Lucy should. She had had two steins so she was game, one problem though was that they were charging fifty DM's to get up. I gave her ten, and finally she was up on the stage. Dancing away to Smoke on the Water, blind on two steins. Well, Lucy managed another one, I in total had six, we had our Lowenbrau in the bag, when we decided it was chicken time and time to get back as we had to drive through Germany to get back to London the following day. Just before we left, I asked Lucy for my Hofbrau glass, as I was feeling a little paranoid, having three glasses in the pack. We walked out and Lucy was clinking and the guards asked me what I had in my bag ????? I showed them my stein complete with docket and we were allowed to leave. Success. Six tents, six different beers, six steins. One chicken later, we were back in coma world in the tent. The following morning, at eight, we jumped in the car, twelve hours later, we were unloading after Oktoberfest number two and we were counting down the days until the next
