As I sit here in Oviedo, I think why? Well, it is possibly one of three reasons

1
) Easter and the May bank holiday being so close so it was a good reason to book a holiday

2
) The librarian in Sydney who gave me a book by Bettina Selby who went on a bike ride

3
) Emperor Hadrian who go me started on this long distance walking thing !!!

Back in 09, Lucy and myself, walked Hadrian's Wall. The following Easter, we decided to take a Pilgrimage to Santiago so we walked the Camino Portuguese. We did think about doing the one that everyone thinks of, the Camino Frances, but as it was a Holy year, we did not want to fight for a bed. And as the year rolled on, I noticed that Easter was next to the May bank holiday, plus Prince Willy decided to get married, so I looked into it and decided that the Camino Primitivo had to be walked. The hardest of all the pilgrimages, but it had to be done because after all, we had just conquered Mt Kinabalu !!!

A flight into Asturias and a bus to Oviedo, this was to be our starting point. We found our hotel and then took a walk into the city. As usual for a Spanish city, it was full of churches, and as this was the day before Easter, there was a huge mass going on inside the Cathedral so we could not get a good look around, plus there were no photos allowed. Another thing about Asturias is that the main drop here is sidra. Basically in English, this is cider. It's not bad, but the locals pour it from the height of their heads into an angled glass without looking, so there is quite a bit of spillage and the Jew in me was thinking, look at all that money going down the drain !!!

Back on the streets, we could hear a marching band, so we followed the crowd. There were men dressed up in Klu Klux Klan type clothes !!! To me, this was very weird as I don't understand this type of religion. There were also floats carrying dummys of their idea of what Jesus and Mary looked like. Once they had gone past, the crowds dispersed, and as it was getting late, we decided to die for the night because we would be starting our Camino and needed a nice long rest
