The Sydney Opera House
Back in 1973, when the Opera House was opened by the Queen, they showed it being opened on tv, and sadly, showing my age, I remember it !!! So as it has been over thirty years since I've done a tour, I decided to book a special tour, the breakfast tour. What this gave us was access to the orchestra pit, the stage, dressing rooms and the green room. It was fascinating checking all this out, actually it was very impressive. Was it worth the $150 per person for two hours? Not really, but it was fun !!!
Later in the day, bored, we went back to the Opera House and did another tour. This one went for an hour and only cost $36 each, and the Jew boy in me got an extra %20 off, so realistically, it was a bargain !!! This was a different tour, and we also got see the theatres in a different light.
Showing my age again, I mentioned to Lucy that back when I was really really young, my Mum took me up the Harbour Pylon, and all I remember was that there were white cats. Now the Pylon closed in 1971 and reopened in 1981, and as Lucy had never been before, we took a trip up. There are some good views of the city, great views of the Opera House and awesome views of the Bridge. In Lucy's eyes, it could have been improved if the cats were placed back !!!
After Adelaide, I hooked up with Zonth who has been seen in many episodes in the past. We did lunch also dinner with Marlene, who was his girlfriend, but now his wife.
Now every year for Oktoberfest, our friend Woggy prints our shirts, and as it has been ten years since we had seen her and hubby Shane, we caught up. How things change, they now have two kids, so we hooked up, had a laugh, and then moved on
And then there was Welf, who we met in Cambodia in 06. The most German guy you could know, who is more Aussie than me !!! We had lunch a couple of times and met his partner Narelle. Sadly though, I think he has turned soft, as he would not have a beer !!!
Now in Sydney, Lucy has a brother and he has four kids, and I have known the two older ones since they were babies. Once we hooked up, all they wanted to do was drink beers with their Uncle David !!! So I did !!! And as Lucy and me met on the ice at Macquarie Centre, we took her nephew Zac, and his girlie for some fun, and typical of a Gledhill, he could skate just like Lucy !!!
Trust me, a visit to Sydney would not be complete without a tour of the Harbour Bridge. Yes it is expensive, in fact, showing my age again, I can remember when I use to pay 5 cents to cross it on my motorbike, but for half a crossing, we paid $198 each !!! Anyway, before I went, one of the guys at work said, do the Discovery tour, it is better as you get to climb the inside arch, so this is the one I booked. And then we got lucky. We had five others but they all worked for the tour company, so we went up front, hung out with the guide and he didn't speak any bullshit to us, and as there was nobody in front of us, we rushed up and got 25 minutes on the top of the bridge. It is a pity it was cloudy, because it was pretty cool just hanging out on top of the bridge !!!
And the day before we left, I said to Lucy, fuck it, lets climb it again, so this time we booked the standard outside arch climb. We hung at the back this time and listened to the commentary. It was ok, but we dawdled, took it all in and enjoyed the time a second time on the bridge. Fuck it was great.
The Best Part
Yes we loved eating the food. Oh the pies, they were unbelievable, but the best part was seeing my Mum. It's funny, I live in London, and I spend my time just hanging out everywhere, but as soon as I land, my Mum is there for me. Like all boys, I love my Mum !!!
Home is where the heart is and I know my home is Sydney. I want to return but personally, I don't think Sydney is ready for my return !!!
