Day 5
Start - Finish
Oxford - Culham
Distance - 19.3 Kilometres

It was funny arriving back in Oxford. The previous stage ending had been one of disappointment, but as we walked away from where we finished, I was happy. We were back on the track, walking through Oxford along the Thames, away from civilization. The buildings on the river were nice, but as we were in a large city, there were no good mornings from the locals, I was kind of expecting it, but as they say, you can only dream !!! As we followed the trail, there was no real track like previous days, we were now marching along an ashphalt path, so because of this, we were powering along. Now normally, we would have been keeping with the pleasure boats, but all we could see were rowers, and they were way to fast for us !!!

We ripped along the track, passing various locks along the way, all electronic though. Still, we were back in the countryside, and the Thames did look nice, and for the first time so far on the walk, we experienced rain, not the normal English rain, just a little bit of light stuff, which didn't deter the walking. The track opened up and the barge boats appeared again as we came into Abingdon. From the otherside of the river, the town looked lovely, so we decided there and then that once we had finished the walk, we would return.

Actually the return was a lot quicker than we expected. We only had five K's to get to Culham, and that was right beside the river. It was a quite nice but we were happy to be back in the car, so we jumped in and headed back to Abingdon.

By road, Abingdon is only a couple of K's away, so we drove over the bridge and followed the signs for parking. We went around a few corners, in fact we did a full circle, and the next minute we were leaving the town !!! Oh well, when we complete the walk, it just gives us a reason to come back, if we can find parking that is !!!

Greater Crested Grebe
Nice pictures. Slight correction- no. 75 is a Greater Crested Grebe. It is unusual to get so close to one like this as they are quite shy birds.
