Today we tried something different. As we would be walking into Oxford, we left the car, jumped into a cab and ended up at the Roses Revived, the place where we had left off

Day 4

Start - Finish

Newbridge - Oxford

Distance - 22.5 Kilometres

At 08:23, Newbridge was nice and deserted, so we took some photos and headed off. The Thames like last week was pretty wiggly, so the going was slow. There were a few pill boxes as well, but not as many as last week. We passed a lock, and around a corner was a historic site that was not marked. At Bablock Hythe, the Romans use to ford here. After they left, nothing happened until 1279, then a rope pull ferry started. This was replaced by a chain version until after WW2. Then we were forced off track, so we followed some fields for an hour before the Thames came back into view.

We both got excited as we neared Swinford as this bridge is one of two toll bridges still in existence on the Thames. Privately owned, cars are charged 5 pence to go over. Bargain really. Back on the river, we walked through a little forest, and stepped into the boundaries of Oxford. We still had around 8 K's, and past numerous locks. Eventually we came across the ruins of the Godstow Nunnery. There wasn't much there, just loads of empty beer cans, which was more than I was expecting. I thought this place was going to be a toilet !!!

As we walked into Oxford, I was a little disappointed. Here we were, in one of the two premier university cities in the UK, and I had no motivation to see this place. Yes the Thames was there, but this was something we had not seen before. I know we have London, but the pureness of what we had seen previously was no more, we were now in suburbia.

And Finally

Baby swan?
Cygnet, darling, cygnet. Excellent pictures particularly the two of Newbridge in reflection - it must have been an exceptionally still morning.
So are you betting on which number the QE bridge will be? I'm quessing 197
