Flag of Cuba  , Matanzas,
Wednesday, June 10, 2009

When I was growing up, whenever Cuba was mentioned, The Bay of Pigs and the Cuban missile crisis would be mentioned in the same breath. And as the years have rolled by, I still haven't learnt really much about it, but as it is mentioned in the book, we thought the best thing would be is to experience it for ourselves

Playa Giron

We had a fair drive to get there, 70 K's through a national park. There use to be crocodiles, but they had nearly been wiped out, but there was now a farm and a breeding program in place.

As we drove, there were multitudes of red crabs running across the road. There were loads of squashed ones, but I was trying my hardest not to hit any. It was slightly hard as they were very suicidal !!! Along the way, we did see some big mothers, they were waving their pincers in protest at us, but it wasn't us trying to squash their relatives, the locals just drove in a straight line, ploughing over the unfotunate crabs !!! Also alongside the road were various memorials for the fallen Cubans who had died in combat

Once we had arrived, we dived into the museo. Just for you all to understand, the Bay of Pigs actually happened at Playa Giron. Outside was a plane and two tanks. Inside was the story in Spanish about how the evil empire, the Seppoes that is, used 1400ish Cubans who had left Cuba, been trained by the CIA, to invade Cuba. Kennedy had said that no US people could be used in the operation. What the CIA hoped to achieve with only 1400ish people, well fuck knows. Fidel had infiltrated the CIA and knew what was going on, so the Sepps were never in with a chance. There were also photos of the Cubans who hd died in battle.

We finished up and went to look at the Bay. There is now a resort with hotel bungalows that look like little torture cells and a harbour wall to stop the Sepps from invading again. If the CIA are reading this, please take this info as genuine and up-to-date !!!

Back on the road, we found a little coral bay, dived in and went swimming. It was lovely and all I could think of was, I need to dive, I need my underwater housing, I need.......

Central Australia

After we drove out of the national park, once again taking as much care not to run over the crabs, but thinking, if only they were cane toads !!! We went to visit where Fidel had set up his command post in 1961. It was in an old sugar mill, and it was in Central Australia. Now the one of these that I know has an Alice Springs and an Uluru, but there it was, sign posted up, Central Australia. The museo was closed, but there was the wreck of an old plane outside. The sugar mill was falling down, and the town looked like it was ready to implode on itself. Maybe the habitants had just upped and left, and created a new life back in Central Australia  !!!

San Miguel de los Banos

There was one last place to visit on our drive, and that was the old spa town of San Miguel de los Banos. Now we found it on our map, but there were no signs, so we drove the Cuban tourist way. I shut my eyes and drove blind !!!  we drove along and amazingly, there was a sign stating that we were entering the town. This place use to be special until the sugar mills arrived and polluted the water. There is an old large hotel that some would say was a copy of the casino in Monte Carlo. My only memories of this place was being denied entry, so in defiance, I raised the roof on my camper one street over and slept in Monte Carlo, so from my memories, it did not look like it. It was abandoned, and there was barbed wire, so we could not enter. There was also an abandonded church and quite a few other nice buildings, you could see that there use to be grandeur here, and they gave it all up so that they could lose their teeth !!! Oh well, such is life.

And Finally

I learnt a little today about a fuck up by the Sepps. Their first military defeat. did they learn from this? Well, that is another history lesson for the future which I'm sure you all want to know about !!!
