As usual we were driving blind, but before we went, Lucy was told by a local Lith girl who she works with, "if you are in Liths, make sure you go to Trakai Castle". And being the tourists that we both are, how could we resist !!!

Trakai Castle

Set in a national park, the area around was really nice, and from a distance, the castle looked awesome, so we parked up and hit the pathway. It was on an island, and from the outside, it looked a little like Malbork Castle in Poland. As we were trying to pay, a queue formed. Well it wasn't really a queue, but a huge scrum of people trying to buy their tickets as we were buying ours. That's when it hit me. Maybe it's not the religious people who are pushy fuckers but Lithuanians in general ??? Once in, it was kind of disappointing. All I could think was that this was so similar to the castle in Kamyanets-Podilsky, so we accepted our fate, fighting for space with locals and got on with it.

Realistically, to us it was pretty crappy, but we had to see this with our own eyes !!! Forty minutes later, we were out of there.

Back on the road, we headed out to see Stalin World, but that's another story on its own !!! But after Stalin World, amazingly, our GPS worked and we found our way into Kaunas.

Kaunas

The second largest city in Liths, and as we drove in, there was a mixture of wooden houses, art deco style buildings and our old favourite. EBA !!! Even our hotel was an old Soviet one, complete with 70's furniture and wallpaper !!! It was great.

Out on the streets, the locals were staring at us, as we were the only tourists around. Oh well, we just got on with it. In the old part, there were some Germanic buildings but we wanted to see the old castle. The pictures I had seen were great, but then again, photos do lie !!! All there was left was a turret !!! Surprisingly, in the centre of town was a Mosque. There use to be a sizeable Muslim population, but they disappeared during Soviet times !!! Who knows where they went, nobody could answer that question !!!

And that was all there really was for Liths second largest town !!!

And Finally

Four days was never enough, and we do need to go back as there is a sister reactor to Chernobyl, an underground missile base and a few other old Soviet things to see !!! Will I ever be satisfied? I think not !!!
