Somehow, or for some other reason, we decided to buy a trip from Kratie, to Stung Treng, then jump in a boat, and by 13:00, we would be over the border. The last time we had done this was back in Albania, and we had been stuck at the border for over nine hours. So hopefully, this would not happen this time.

Armed with two other travellers, Colin, who was Irish and his girlfriend George, who was English, we were meant to leave at 07:30, but it didn't happen. At 08:00, our minibus arrived and we were on our way. Well, only around the corner to the bus station !!! We were also meant to have an air conditioned bus, but the only air condition that we had was that the windows were open !!! I walked back to the hotel, and I told them that the bus sucked as it didn't have AC and that we still had not left. A boy who worked there, rang the driver, and told me that we were ready to go. Another guy, turned around and told me that the driver didn't want me on his bus now and that I was not going to get any money back. I looked at him, told him to fuck off, and walked off. By the time I got back to the van, it was running, and off we went. We never did find the reason why there was no AC, but at least we were now moving, be it an hour late.

Three hours later, we arrived. We had pulled up at a restaurant and were expected to eat some food, but as I believe in spreading my wealth through the country, and we all wanted to go, we were told that we would be leaving at 12:30 when the boat arrived. Bullshit number one. We were also told that thhey were waiting for two more people to come from Kratie. Bullshit number two. I was getting agitated and was ready for some action, but Lucy would not let me lose it. Over at another table was a German who lived in Australia, so I went and spoke to him instead. At 12:30, we were told that the boat had been there all along !!! And that we would leave now, just the four of us !!! So we jumped in this tiny little boat, which had a Toyota 2 litre motor strapped into the back of it. Our bags were tied to the front, and we were off. The noise was deafening. We were moving really quickly and my bag was lifting up out of the boat. I was getting worried that it was going to fly out, but the driver would not stop, so I was getting ready to jump when needed. As we moved along the Mekong, it was showing loads of little islands as we were still in dry season. I was slightly worried that a rock would appear from nowhere and we would be thrown. Also, it was fucking uncomfortable as my knees were up to where my ears were. And after an hour, we had arrived. Up the stairs we climbed and straight to talk to the customs officers. We handed over our passports and then the guards asked for a fee of a $1.00 for stamping our passports. Colin looked at him, and said no, and for somw unknown reason, they accepted this and we were off. We had completed our trip in Cambodia

Confession

I did enjoy coming back to Cambodia but there are still some things left to see, so we might have to come back. Realistically, Cambodia has changed loads. Phnom Penh has become more civilized, Siem Reap was always going to get loads of tourists, but I don't like the Western bars everywhere. Kampot was charming and Bokor was awesome, as to be expected. And now for the big news. Drum roll please. I have accepted a job back at BT and will be starting in June. All the wage problems have been ironed out, so, quite sadly, this little part of my life is winding down. Laos, here we come !!!
