Having been to the Christmas markets the previous year, Lucy and I booked another flight to go to Germany for another weekend. This time, we planned to do the markets in Munster and koln, once again. We also wanted to get back to Wewelsburg as we wanted to do a tour of the castle

Being Ryanair, we had a really early flight out of Stanstead. As we drew close to Germany, we were told that we were not going to land as it was to foggy and that we would be landing at Maastricht, in the Netherlands, and then placed on a bus and driven back to Niederrhein airport. Once down, we asked Hertz if we could pick up our hire car from here instead of Niederrhein, but the costs were to high as we were in another country. Four hours later, we were picking up the car and driving towards Wewelsburg

Once in Wewelsburg, we went to the local museum before going in the castle. Here, we found out that the Nazis were going to turn Wewelsburg into their centre of the universe !!!!! Into the castle we went, and we discovered that it used to be used for witches trials and as holding cells for the Jews. There was a lot of uninteresting history as well, but we were only here to see the crypt, which the Nazis had used Russian POW's to dig out. It was quite amazing. Twelve pedestals with the Nazi insignia in the ceiling. It was designed by Himmler to represent the twelve Knights of the round table, with Hitler being the King Arthur character. Before the war finished, the Nazis attempted to blow the castle up. It didn't work, and the Germans restored it in 1955 and like all good German castles, they partially turned it into a youth hostel

After leaving, we had the mad dash down the autobahn until we arrived in Koln. Getting into the city was easy, finding the hotel was a nightmare. We eventually found it, unpacked, jumped on a tram and went into the city. Found the first market, bought a gluwein, and then had a walk. Koln gluwein, was as like last year, bloody strong. So we moved on, asking people where the ice rink was as Lucy had brought her skates and wanted to skate. After a few more markets, there it was. Now in London, for 10.00, you get 1 hour skating time, but in Koln, for 1.75, you get 90 minutes, so Lucy went off skating, and I went of gluweining. After another three, the Christmas huts were starting to close, so it was food time. I wanted garlic mushrooms, and I knew they sold them at the Dom, so that was where I was headed. But then I saw the potato man, so I had one of these, with garlic sauce, then I found the mushroom man, so I had these. By this stage, Lucy had finished skating and wanted food, so we went back to the mushrooms. She wanted a potato as well, but the potato man had packed up and gone home by this stage, so she settled for the mushrooms, and a couple of mugs of gluwein. Then she saw the melted garlic cheese man. We had had this last year as well, and I was bursting, but I managed to down some of this as well, followed by more gluwein. The rest was a haze and somehow, I woke up in the morning, hungover as all fuck. A quick shower, and then into the car, where we had another mad drive up the autobahn as we were on our way to Munster

We had never been to Munster. I had always associated this town with Herman Munster since I was a kid !!! We parked up, found the markets and hit the gluwein, well, only a little as I still had to drive to the airport. Sadly for Lucy, there were no ice skating rinks, so, she just drank more gluwein. We walked, took loads of photos and as the fog rolled in, it became quite eerie. We managed to find the mushroom man again, and also the ham roll and the pea soup man. So this was basically our weekend away. Food, gluwein, more food and gluwein and finally, last but not least, I had my first Berliner, virginity broken. Well, at least I achieved something !!!!!
