Day 3
Catas Altas, MG, Brazil
August 23, 2009 08:27 a.m. ( local time )
Day 3 (August 23– Sunday) : Drive to Nova Era (en route stop in Catas Altas) to visit Emerald Mine.
Today is a travel day. Pack up and hit the road towards Nova Era for Emerald mines and overnight in Governador Valadares. On the way we made a pit stop in Catas Altas, a small town still part of the historic circuit cities. We relaxed in front of the main church and what a chock when looking farther to the left! An amazing hematite mountain was just unfolded to us. I explain: the whole area is an iron ore mining site, having many of iron ore mining operations. The mountain is basically iron ore. It is called "Itabirito" which is the source of iron that contains a teor of 65% of iron in it.
After visiting the church and stopping at a typical small restaurant for a snack, we headed to Nova Era.
