Andres is still here so we took the opportunity to go away for a couple of days to Peru. First we drove down to a little town called Macara which is just by the International Bridge by the border with Peru. quite a nice little market town but a bit hot and dusty in the summer.

We tried to cross the border into Peru but andres had some problems leaving Ecuador, appartently he needed some new document that he was not aware of and they would not let him out. We had to go back to Macara and he was going to try and get this document sorted in the town hall (where he knew some people). When we got there they were closed for lunch so we went off to a little restuarant and got some massive portion of chicken and rice and a glass of chicha or two. Went back to the town hall only to find out that they had gone for the day!! Went back to the border and after a lot of talking (and some bribes) Andres managed to get out. He had the same problem trying to get into Peru so had to pay again and they only gave him permission to stay for 3 days!!

Finally on our way down to Piura. One you pass the border you notice that they really have a problem with rubbish in Peru. Loads and loads of rubbish along the road side and lots of people living in very poor shacks just next to it. We passed through a town called Sullana and we had to close the car windows because of the stinking rubbish!  The centre of Piura is great - full of life and lots of restaurants and bars. Went to a very nice pizza place. Great to have some western food again and they sold some Chilean wine there quite cheap by the glass - fantastic - I really enjoyed that. (All they have here is beer and it's not my favourite - but you kind of get used to it).... after the meal we went to a fun bar. They had Happy Hour there until midnight. A very good idea - they should have that in London too!

Next day we went to the little market town called Catacaos very near to Piura. It has a great craft market with lots of beautiful  bright coloured wood vases and other ornaments. Unfortunately most things were to large for us to buy and put in our luggage. We also had a meal there and some more chicha.

We then went back over the border to Ecuador. Immigration refused to extend our visa here so we still need to get out of the country on 12th September. Never mind - at least we tried. This means that we are going to leave Cruzpamba on 28th August to allow for some time to see most of the sights we want to visit in the north of the country.
