My life has been pretty stressful for the past couple of months (sike!) so I decided to take a week off and hit the beach town of Sihanoukville southwest of Phnom Penh.  The city is the former hang out and is named after the king and is the biggest port in Cambodia. The city itself is spread out compared to other Cambodian cities.

Our little tourist group expanded on the bus ride to a young British couple (Dani and Tom), a woman from Portland (Megan) and a SCUBA divemaster most recently living in Honduras (Garth).  The day we arrived we walked around the Victory Hill area of town, where we were staying, and visited the closest beach, Victory Beach.  Then we headed to another beach for some barbecued seafood and some belated birthday cocktails.  I certainly didn't have a hard time finding people to help me celebrate my birthday.

The next couple of days consisted of reading, lounging, sunscreen, fruit shakes and freshly grilled squid and lobster lunches.  Not exciting material for the blog but very relaxing.  We also checked out all 4 of the beaches in town, the market, even the local expat rock band.

Yesterday Megan and I (everyone else had left) took a tour to Ream National Park for a boat trip through a mangrove forest and a hike to a secluded beach.  It wasn't very exciting but it was nice to see Cambodia's conservation efforts.
Tomorrow I am heading to a small town east called Kampot.  I am not sure what is there but I am thinking of taking a tour along the coast to a place called Kep.  Not sure what is there either but I'm going to find out!

Megan Light
We met an older woman at FM Light that didn't know Megan but knew what part of the family had moved to Oregon. She said Megan would be a great grandaughter of F.M.

Didn't get us any discount.
