So, sometimes in life you think "WOW - every day just gets better and better here!".....I now firmly believe as soon as you think that you are done-for. After leaving Pyin U Lwin after the festival we were on such a travel-high. We headed back to Mandalay and decided to stay for one more night as we wanted to spend just a little more time there.

All ahead full the next day for Monywa - we were keen enough to even get up really early for a bus.....which it turned out no bus companies would let us get on. HUH??? No one wants us/our money?!?! What twilight zone have we entered?? But indeed 'twas the truth - no bus companies would sell us tickets to go to Monywa. (Which incidentally is juts a really small, rather grubby town a couple of hours away from Mandalay) Never ones to shy away from a challenge, we went back to our hotel to come up with a plan. We had chatted the night before to a local trishaw guy who seemed quite 'in the know' so I quizzed him up after breakfast. He couldn't understand what was going on either and did a little investigating for us - turns out the bus companies to this town are currently refusing foreigners without a Myanmar/English speaking guide. The reasons for this were terribly vague at best, we never really did figure out why. Nevertheless, the trishaw guy was happy enough to accompany us on the bus (of course for a rather princely sum) and we eventually arrived in Monywa.

Now why would we bother? I took it into my head that I wanted to see the world's second tallest standing Buddha, which just so happens to have been completed here in 2006. All in all, it was okay (a mighty big Buddha indeed) but part way there Malcolm started to feel poorly......

The next morning Malcolm woke up feeling very sick indeed, so that day was spent in the hotel just resting. Which was okay really, because I went out about the town for a little bit and there really wasn't much of interest!
Next stop is Pakokku - more on that in the next blog!
Love,

Is that standing pagoda not world's tallest ? I think that is not world's second, world's first. If it is the second tallest, which one is the first??

Hello, I am pretty sure that the world's tallest standing Buddha is in China, isn't it? I think in Henan province?

Interesting. Not sure whey they dont want to sell you bus tickets. Could it be because they think you were there for political reason? By the way I am a local, born and bred in Monywa. I would like to invite you to visit Monywa again.
