After I mentioned I was getting a bit tired of Western Europe, a few people said I should check out Budapest or further east. I was thinking it was too far away and that going that direction would screw up my plans. I checked and it wasn't that far and I'm free so I don't need to stick to travel plans...so I skipped western Austria (more Bavaria) and went to Vienna for a night and am now in Budapest, Hungary.

Last entry I was still in Munich. I saw more of the sights there and Spiderman 2 (in English!). There are bier gartens everywhere, by the way. Seems every bar has one. The Germans must like to drink outdoors (not that I blame them). MO's friend, Dicky, had a bbq at his place for his girlfriend's co-workers so I got some good food and chatted with people from around Europe for ideas on where to go / what to see.

I went southeast a bit from there to Berchtesgaden. That area was kind of a second headquarters to the Nazis in the 1930s and during WWII. Kehlstein (the Eagle's Nest) was given to Hitler as a 50th bday present and has a view all over the area (when it's not cloudy). My first day there the weather was relatively good, but the next day was cloudy and rainy (so I didn't get good views from the Eagle's Nest). To get to the hotel from the train station, I walked and walked and walked...had to go up a steep hill at least 50 miles long. Ya, far. While there, Spanky got himself a new lederhosen outfit!

Berchtesgaden

Vienna has lots of cool buildings and architecture. Very fancy look to the city. I just had an afternoon to wander around and see things. I'll be back in a couple months and can see more (and perhaps an opera or music in the concert hall). The evening I was there, I went out with a group from the hostel. There was a movie and food booths setup by the Rathaus so we hung out there.

Spanky at Karlskirche, Vienna

The language in Budapest is definately a challenge. I can't read any of the signs and have no clue what people are saying. I have to hope they speak English 'cuz I don't know how to say anything. Yesterday I took a walking tour around the city with a lovely young guide. I got to see some of the sights and learn some Hungarian history too. Today I'm seeing what I missed yesterday and made a stop at the baths. There are plenty of attractive women in Budapest, but they must not like the baths. It seems it draws tourists and all the unattractive Hungarians. There were plenty of people there who just should not be allowed to wear a swimsuit in public.

Szechenyi Baths

Tomorrow I'll see Bratislava and back to Vienna. Then to Salzburg for a couple days before meeting up with Teeter in Prague.
