2 national holidays combined with a weekend break this year formed a 6 days vacation  for the whole country in the beginning of May. A dream come true for the travel industry which had sold out on packages months before. Our plans were to go to Greece with Meteora as more specific destination and hopefully a day or two at the beach, if the weather allowed. We've been in Thessaloniki for a couple of times before, so we booked a hotel in Katerini, which was close enough to Bulgaria and was a good starting point for Meteora, Mount Olymp and at the same time at the beach.  The whole country was moving around and to nighbouring Greece and Turkey, so we decided to start our trip on the second day of the holidays to avoid the terrible traffic on the road and the jams at the border. As expected, most of the people had already moved out, so without any delay at the border and in about 4 hours driving we were in Thessaloniki. I've always liked the city and its cafes, so we couldn't miss the regular walk along the sea lane to the White Tower and a frappe in one of the nearby bars. We checked some shops and in a few hours hit the road to Katerini, some 70 kms south of Thessaloniki. Our hotel was in Olympic beach - a small and very peaceful at this time of the year resort near Katerini. The hotel was brand new and offered studios for 3-4 people with self-catering facilities, which suited us perfectly. Before dinner we took a walk down to the beach which was about 5 minutes away and visited the souvenir shops which were already open. The village looked very pleasant, with predominating family hotels and rooms to let, nice houses with flower gardens and a number of taverns, lining the beach.
