Okefenokee swamp

Thursday, February 21, 2013

Great weather day here.  Has hit seventy five and lots of sun. We left about eleven this am for the okefenokee swamp in way cross Georgia. About 60 miles from here.  The swamp has had a major fire in 07 and is now in the recovering stage.  Hiked about a half mile through the swamp on a board walk just inches off the water. Lots of interesting vegetation with some carnivorous pants noted. Perfect day for this in temp was right, no bugs, few people. We took a boat tour through te swamp as well. About an hour. Water in the swamp is currently about 18 inches deep.  The area has been in drought for about 2years.  Water is down about two feet overall. Guide reported that the fire has caused lots of the wild life to disappear, as well as the drought.  The gators are consuming lots of wild life including devouring their own. Saw one huge gator about 12 feet long. Just enjoying the sun. On the road, Eric
