The House of Joshua (HoJ) has been looking after young Bulgarian state care leavers since September 2007, with the project now beginning its 5th year of operation. Here the Trussell Trust, through our in-country NGO- the Foundation for Social Change and Inclusion (FSCI), has been helping vulnerable young people towards independence after a life of institutionalisation and often, neglect. Through our programme of education, life skills training and employment we are able to ensure that these young adults leave with the skills and jobs neccesary for an independent life free from the threat of hunger, uemployability and criminal activity that claims many of their peers. With hundreds leaving state institutions every year too many kids face a stark choice; try and find the families that could not feed them or take their chances on the streets with the drug dealers, pimps and human traffickers
The team are staying at HoJ for a few days and it was great to see Veneta, the house-parent and Pepe, the manager on our arrival yesterday. Together with HoJ's residents (Niki, Ivanka, Marian, Sasho, Tsetsi and, for the summer hols only, old boy Stoyil) we were given a really warm welcome and felt at home immediately.
To see Sasho talk about the difference HoJ has made for him in even a short time click here.
Pete & Maggie Cole have again joined us and they arrived only slightly hot and bothered this afternoon. Alice was very glad to see them as they had brought her luggage from the airport after yesterdays mix up. Thanks to Niki Z for saving the day! Simon, Myfanwy and Georgie Foster are visiting for a couple of days and as I type are camping out in the back garden with the cicadas and the local stray dogs- both are very loud at night despite Rich's best efforts to get rid of the dogs.
Now I did say that all was well and it was until we got home from dinner tonight only to discover that Alice had lost the key to the girls' room. We are clearly going to have watch Alice as a theme seems to be developing. A light bit of breaking and entering later access to the room was acheived. We await with bated breath to see what young Hudson will think up for us tomorrow.
Right. Here doggy...
