Hi all, first let me say that my internet connection is slower than dial up!!! So i will wait to upload pictures. We rented a car today and Phil had his first try at the Italian roads! He did a great job and we actually survived even the round and round abouts! Our adventure for today was Cortona, the setting for the book and movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" The author still maintains her home there which we went by today. It was market day in Cortona, just like in the movie. I will say that there were more American tourist there than Italians, i think. Of course we followed the footsteps of the movie and even had lunch overlooking the piazza where she wrote the postcard for the guy. Everything looked just as in the movie, a quaint mountaintop town that kept going up and up.You must have very strong legs to live there. Thank you Cortona, I was able to cappucino after lunch there! Siesta is taken seriously here, everything closes down at 2pm, even the gas station! Everyone disapears and then one by one they reappear around 5pm.
The italians love their dogs! As we sit and watch the people from our perch, we see most italians with their dogs, they go to market, to the cafe, the bar. All the dogs are so well behaved! You never see one bark or snarl at another dog or person. They are so happy because they go everywhere.
Last night we came across the neighborhood contrada celebration for the winning horse in the Palio. Everyone wore their flags around their neck, the neighborhood streets were filled with hanging flags and even lamps in the orange and blue of the winner. Tonight was the big dinner in the streets with the winnng horse as the guest of honor! It is something to see. They wear their flags with such pride. There is no money won in this race, just honor. Phil was able to talk with the riggers and lighting folks setting up for the event.
We went to market again in Rocco Pilli and made our dinner here at the villa. The place is full this weekend. Our dinner was wonderful outside on the patio and we got it all cleaned up just before the rain! Tomorrow we will set out on another adventure! to be continued
