First things first. Happy Birthday Julie! I feel terrible that I'm missing my wife's birthday (...again). I know my kids stepped up and delivered the birthday wishes, gifts and love, but we didn't get to celebrate like she deserves. She was beyond cool about it and says we'll make up for it when I return. deal. The flight from JFK to Doha, Qatar was 12 smooth and painless hours. Qatar Airlines runs a nice operation, great service and organization. I know international carriers need to toe the line in this regard, but coming off my experience with our hometown Phoenix airline last week...this trip has been quite a contrast. Speaking of Qatar. Yes, the "official" correct pronunciation is "Kutter", but it is clear that many (Qatar Airline employees, Doha citizens) protest this fact and are clinging to the more impressive and Middle Eastern sounding "KA-TAR". I personally agree. I take comfort in the fact that we're going to "Ne-Paul". It wouldn't be nearly as cool to tell everyone that I'm going to "Nip-ple".  We arrived at 7:30p local time. It's my first visit to the Middle East and it will be a short one. Just long enough for an airport shuttle, a quick meal, some rest and then up early to catch a 6:25a flight to Kathmandu. Qatar seems to be a very modern and affluent country. A $2 billion renovation to its airport has Doha set to be the main aviation hub of the Middle East.
