Where I stayed
Mic Waugh and I traveled to NYC to met the rest of the crew on 3/19. On Saturday, we had one day to look over all the gear, test equipment, shop for last minute items and pack everything up for an 11:30p departure out of JFK. The Team:
Jonathan Fierro - Series Producer and great friend. Jonathan has produced 19 episodes of this show while traveling to as many countries in the last couple years. Jonathan and I are long time friends from the old ASU days. We've worked together before, but never on something of this magnitude . We've talked about working together on an adventure like this for awhile and it's all come together on this trip.
Dhani Jones - I just met Dhani, but I know his on camera personality well. Outside of being one of the top linebackers in the NFL, this guy has a great on camera presence and dives into whatever culture is in front of him. He seems like a good guy. Never a bad thing to have a 240 lb finely tuned athlete on an adventure like this.
Brit Gordon - Brit is also a college friend. He doesn't work in the TV business, but he is an experienced mountaineer and will be a camera assistant. Brit and Jonathan have summited Kilimanjaro, Mount Rainier and the Grand Tetons.
Mic Waugh - Mic is a production colleague of mine in the Phoenix area and a good friend. I asked Mic to join the crew as Jonathan's audio man couldn't make the trip and I knew Mic had three important qualities; he knows audio and has good gear, he knows the camera we are shooting (Sony EX3) well as a shooter and...he is in shape.
Lisa Ripi - Lisa is Dhani's trainer. Traveling with boxes of acupuncture needles, she is tasked with the job of "putting Dhani back together". I hear the crew sometimes gets to benefit from her therapeutic talents as well. I think we'll need it.
Me - I will be the DP of the shoot and can't wait to look through the viewfinder at some of the scenery we'll be face to face with. It will be a big challenge, but it will be nice to get some time away from my inbox.
Off we go to Doha, Qatar for our first leg.
