Our second day with our tuk tuk driver, Bob, was spent exploring the larger circuit around Angkor Wat. First temple was Preah Khan, one of the largest complexes in Angkor and might have been a Buddhist university. There were loads of corridors and fine carvings and moss adding color to the walls. Then there is a Roman like structure in the middle, curiously out of place. We then went to Ta Som, a little temple with a massive tree growing through one of the entrances. We drove 30 km away passing villages and school kids and stopping at a gas station, the attendant was maybe 10 years old. We ended at Banteay Srei, a very small complex but the intricate carvings are truly amazing.
The last two temples we visited were Pre Rup and Banteay Kdel. Pre Rup was good for climbing and views of the surronding area. Banteay Kdel was a very long corridor with open spaces and it poured down rain while we were there. We wanted to buy a book on Angkor from the mine victims at the temple but they were seeking shelter from the rain and we missed them. This was another full day of exploring temples and we met up with the Dutch brothers we met while tubing in Laos and went had dinner and drinks with them and played imaginery ball at Angkor What Bar.
