Where I stayed
swag under the Milky Way
GD: After a night underground at Coober Pedy we were off to Uluru (Ayers Rock) for sunset. It was a long day of driving with a few stops for lunch with flies, emus, and toilets. We finally made it to Uluru with enough time to take a few snapshots before sunset. We had biscuits (crackers) and dips and sparkling wine out of plastic mugs. We camped out in swags which is like a roll out canvas mattress. Our guide (Outback Nick) assured us nothing could climb up the side of the swag and that we were perfectly safe. Not too sure about that but it was awesome to sleep under the stars in the middle of the outback. We saw several shooting stars and heard some dingoes before falling asleep.
The next morning we went back to Uluru for sunrise. We witnessed the sacred site from darkness then through shades of brillant red from the sun. We had an option of taking the 8km base walk or climb up to the top. Since this is a sacred site to the Aboriginal tribe that inhabit the lhand, they ask that you do not climb. We did the basshae walk and one person did the climb. Uluru is a majestic sight to behold, the energy permeating the area is awesome. After all it is just one giant red rock in the middle of nowhere but for some reason it is stunning and an absolute highlight of the trip. After the walk we went to Kata Tjuta for a short 2km return walk.
