Arrived in the Cinque Terre today by train from Rome.  These 'Five Towns' (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso) are on the Ligurian Coast going towards the border of France.  For hundreds of years the path that linked these villages was the only way for locals to pass through to trade, etc, so nowadays the walk between the 5 towns is quite famous.  The coastline is very picturesque, with colourful little houses dotting the cliffside, you can see vines growing and they have little 'terraces' for growing vegetables, etc carved into the hillside...just magical and exactly like the postcards you see :)

We are staying in the second town, Manarola, which is one of the quieter towns.   It was raining pretty heavily on and off the first day...we just went down to the local cafe and ordered some focaccias, did the 'Lovers Walk' to Riomaggiore (meant to be a lovely walk, it was horrible with graffiti everywhere and people had even carved their names into the poor trees and cacti along the way...obviously too many tourists have been along here, very disappointing).

We went out for dinner to a local Manarola seafood restaurant, the food was delicious!

The next day we got up early to do the walk from Monterosso to Corniglia (it was pretty hard for unfit Trishi...I could only get from Monterosso to Vernazza and I was done in!).  So we had gelati and caught the train back *blush*  We caught the train back to Monterosso for dinner and I had fantastic mussels in a garlic and white wine sauce...mmm!!

Wouldn't mind coming back to this part of the world again.. I have fallen in love with Italy!!
